The Shift to the New Income Tax Act 2025
The financial landscape in India is undergoing a massive transformation with the implementation of the Income Tax Act, 2025 and the associated Income Tax Rules, 2026. As we enter Financial Year 2026-27 (Assessment Year 2027-28), the focus has shifted heavily toward digital compliance, data transparency (like the expanded Annual Information Statement), and making the New Tax Regime more attractive.
Tax Slabs for FY 2026-27 (AY 2027-28)
The government has solidified the New Tax Regime as the default regime. Unless you specifically opt out, your employer will deduct TDS based on these slabs. The good news? The slabs remain highly lucrative for the middle class:
- Up to ₹4,00,000: Nil
- ₹4,00,001 to ₹8,00,000: 5%
- ₹8,00,001 to ₹12,00,000: 10%
- ₹12,00,001 to ₹16,00,000: 15%
- ₹16,00,001 to ₹20,00,000: 20%
- ₹20,00,001 to ₹24,00,000: 25%
- Above ₹24,00,000: 30%
Key Deductions & Rebates to Remember
Under the New Tax Regime in FY 2026-27, the standard deduction for salaried individuals is ₹75,000. More importantly, the Section 87A rebate ensures that if your taxable income is ₹12,00,000 or below, your tax liability is absolutely ZERO.
If your income slightly exceeds ₹12 Lakhs, you are protected by Marginal Relief, which ensures your tax doesn't exceed the amount of income you earned above the threshold.
Digital Compliance & ITR Filing 2026 Changes
With the new rules, tax authorities are heavily utilizing data matching between your GST returns, TDS (Form 26AS), and AIS (Annual Information Statement). It is highly recommended to reconcile all digital footprints before filing your new ITR forms for 2026-27.
